About Maria Cherry Gallery - Tom Tunget
I really enjoy turning wood. I find my time on the wood lathe relaxing. I look for what God has put into the wood for us to find. It never ceases to amaze me what is revealed in the wood through grain, color and fiber orientation I use the gifts and skills that God has given to me. I have an idea of the shape I'm going for, but I try to let each piece reflect what is inside. Each piece is unique and shows the wood's individual character. In going green, I reclaim wood meant for landfills, giving it new purpose. I support responsible forestry and I refuse to use endangered species.
When selecting wood I search for interesting grain and pattern compositions which will result in dramatic effects. I primarily use woods local to Arizona. My designs incorporate the natural beauty of each piece’s unique, innate color characteristics. All my pieces have a finish on them but I prefer a clear or less pigmented finish. This lets the wood's natural beauty show through. Each piece is signed, individually numbered and has the type of wood it is made from on the bottom.
